2 lb Granny Smith apples (4), peeled, cored, and chopped
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
4 garlic cloves, quartered
1/2 teaspoon chopped fresh marjoram or thyme

Preparation

  1. Simmer all ingredients in a 3-quart heavy saucepan, covered, stirring occasionally, until apples fall apart and garlic is tender, about 15 minutes. Mash garlic into applesauce. Season with salt and pepper.
